There are a few nice cotton textures out there but unless you have an electron microscope sometimes the fidelity isn’t that high, so I though I’d make one. A lot of the modelling was done in Layout with bones twisting and bending the mesh, then saving out a transformed mesh back to Modeller for extra tweaking.
The final tweak was adding turbulent displacement to vary the pattern a little, then render out the passes with an orthographic camera, using the passes in ‘Compositing Buffer Export’ to generate these:
The normal maps seemed to require some axis flipping when brought back into Layout’s node editor for surfacing. Testing with 2 coloured spotlights.
But over all I’m happy with a texture I will be using a lot! Feel free to download the png images from the gallery above.
